Our 20-year relationship with the hospital ensured that we had a thorough understanding of existing services on site from the outset, as well as an established appreciation of their strategic and operational needs. This knowledge drove our early masterplanning and feasibility work, which assessed services infrastructure relocation requirements and informed staging considerations to enable ongoing operations—critical to ensuring the continuity required to support ongoing fly-in-fly-out medical specialist commitment in this regional location.

The services element for the staging was critical. Changes to Australian Standards requiring CSSD upgrades, combined with the main switchboard, medical gas systems, sprinkler control valve, and electrical generator all being located within the redevelopment area, created

extraordinary complexity. We designed a
carefully sequenced relocation strategy—moving generator, medical gases, and main switchboard in stages whilst considering sterile environment workflows and delivery requirements.

Our integrated thinking informed the design solution for the separate Cancer Centre site, extending the services infrastructure from the theatres project despite different builders, demonstrating systems-level planning that delivered long-term value. We specified equipment familiar to local service firm—from chillers and generators to building management systems and nurse call systems—recognising that maintainability in regional contexts requires deliberate attention to local supplier networks and mechanical familiarity.
